You will explore the varied roles of a mental health professional in the 21st century, within the context of mental health outside of, but articulating with, tertiary services. You will critically analyse the growing role and opportunities for their discipline within the non-government and primary health sectors and deconstruct consumers’ experiences of care within those settings. In this unit, you will cover:

  • Key stakeholders and funding streams within primary care and non-government contexts
  • Relationships between the recovery and medical models and experienced consumer care
  • Stepped care and integrated care pathways: barriers, enablers and required capabilities
  • Vulnerable mental health consumer groups within the community
  • Lived experience and its impact on therapeutic relationships and within professionalised roles

Learning outcomes

  • Evaluate the opportunities, outputs and contexts surrounding mental health primary care funding streams with implications for all mental health stakeholders
  • Integrate paradigms of service delivery ranging from the recovery to medical models and how these models translate to the non-government and primary health service delivery to consumers
  • Deconstruct stepped care, its barriers and opportunities and impact on consumers and their families
  • Analyse the range of interventions within primary health settings and the impact of these interventions for at least one vulnerable group within the community
  • Critically discuss the needs, influences and roles of lived experience staffs including their transitioning from consumer to staff member and integration into service teams

You are assessed according to the following components, each with its own weighted value against your overall result:

  • Critical review - 30%
  • Consumer focused treatment plan - 60%
  • Discussion board - 10%
