SCU Deputy Dean of School of Business & Tourism Dr James Carlopio discusses the relevancy of an MBA in today's market.

I definitely think that the MBA degree is still relevant and will be relevant for the foreseeable future today because one of the fantastic things about an MBA is that it gives you a broad view of business. I have been a management consultant as well as an academic from 40 odd years and I've never seen a strategy problem that didn't also involve people, marketing, finance, accounting and that's what the MBA gives you. You may come in with a marketing bench but you leave understanding strategy as well as marketing and finance and accounting and people organizational behaviour. And that's why that degree so relevant still because all of our problems are multifaceted. They're multidisciplinary.

Effectively lead and manage people

A Master of Business Administration with a Managing and Leading People specialisation will develop both your business know-how and practical skills – with a focus on people – to advance your career or build your own business. You’ll examine contemporary management and develop solutions to complex commercial situations through the prism of the fast-paced, ever-evolving global digital economy.

This degree from SCU Online will equip you with the latest concepts and knowledge to effectively manage, motivate and inspire with leadership styles tailored to achieve strategic goals. Specialising your MBA allows you to hone in on industry-specific skills while you study a practical, well recognised postgraduate course.

Paul-MBA testimonial

An MBA is just a good, general piece of education that helps you understand more broadly how a company functions, and gave me some knowledge that was really important for where my career is at the moment.

I highly recommend this course, it has been a wonderful experience, tough at times, but I'm better for it. The flexibility of the learning is perfect for busy executives and it's very current so everything applies to your real-world experiences.

Mark-MBA Health Services Management testimonial
MBA Student Mark

For me, this was the next natural progression in my career as a leader in Health and Technology. The fact that my work and home life are time-poor, like many of us, led me down the path of online study where I could set my own pace for each module of the course. Online study also meant that I didn't have the distraction of having to travel to campus or sit in lectures.

Mark Thompson

MBA (Health Services Management) student

Listen to Pat discuss what employees are looking for in their MBA hires.

Subheading: What are the sought after skills that organisations look for? It depends on the type of industry but in general, the skills are things like leadership, problem solving and teamwork. I’m also seeing signs of more attention being given by graduate recruiters to a prospective candidate’s psychological profile, things like emotional intelligence and psychological capital. I believe that psychological capital is a strong graduate quality that students unknowingly develop as they work through their MBA. Subheading: Do you think that specialisation makes sense in the current job market and why? I think it depends on the individual. For some, it may be important to specialise in a particular discipline in order to help them stand out. For other though, particularly those who have been working in a specific discipline area for some time, and are seeking to step up into a more senior management role, developing and broadening their management role will be important. Subheading: What are the key learning outcomes students gain from the MBA? The core units of the MBA are purposely broad, and therefore students gain a stronger understanding of various concepts including accounting, finance, marketing and governance. They can therefore play a key role in the decision making process that goes on within their organisations.
