David Noble, Course Coordinator for the online Master of Project Management at Southern Cross University, discusses how project management ties into the changing business landscape in Australia and globally.

Subheading: How does project management tie into the changing business landscape in Australia, and globally? David Noble: "The global digital economy means that we are connected like never before, and the way that connection happens in almost every area of business today is through projects. A lot of companies are now basically projectised management structures and so when you are studying a Master of Project Management, you are equipping yourself not to work in yesterday's economy or even today's economy, you're equipping yourself to work in the economy of the next two or three decades. It's about taking something that has a defined start and a defined end and making sure that you can manage that process in a way that delivers to the end-user a high-quality product, no matter where you are in Australia or in the world; or no matter whether you're in IT or whether you're in financial services."

Deliver projects on time, on budget and within scope

Course Coordinator David Noble explains how an online Master’s degree in project management helps you to progress further in your career.

Subheading: Who is eligible to study a Master of Project Management? David Noble: "So when it comes to gaining admission to the Master of Project Management, there's a number of pathways. The traditional pathway is for someone who has a Bachelor's degree and a number of years of experience in industry, to be able to gain entry to it. And so a lot of people think all that cuts me out, but the reality is that there is lots of people out there with five, 10, 15, 20 years experience in project management and related fields. We recognise that wealth of experience that those people bring, we acknowledge it and in many situations, those people can get automatic entry into the Master of Project Management." Subheading: What career pathways become available to those who gain a Masters degree in Project Management? David: "When it comes to the Master of Project Management and how it relates to your career progression, what it does is that it gives you a very structured framework in which to work. It allows you to know that what you're doing has a firm research-based framework underneath it, a foundation if you like, and I guess one of the examples I can give is: a student that had been managing projects for about seven or eight years, they undertook our course and at the end of it, I had a conversation with them and he said to me: you know, David, I've been managing projects by the seat of my pants for years and doing it relatively successfully, but now I know why they were successful - and now I know how to improve in the future - and what that will give me is much more credibility with my superiors and my stakeholders and my customers. And I just know that I have much more confidence in my ability as a project manager and credibility as a project manager, than I did have before."

Meet our Course Coordinator

David Noble is the Course Coordinator for the Master of Project Management at Southern Cross University Online, based at the University’s Gold Coast campus. He is a doctoral researcher, focussing on collaborative competencies in a university-industry research environment. He teaches both undergraduate and postgraduate programs in project management, as well as facilities and risk management for the hospitality sector. David has previously worked in corporate and not-for-profit roles, along with his current experience as a lecturer and Course Coordinator at Southern Cross University. David completed an MBA and realised that many of his day-to-day tasks in the office were actually more centred around project management. He decided to pursue this angle, meaning he has both professional and academic acumen to pass on to his Master of Project Management students.
