Unit description

Introduces students to the latest evidence-based research about how leaders can develop positive behaviours that build organisational and individual support-resources for employees. Employees then can use these resources to reduce their stress and increases their wellbeing and engagement.

Module 1. Introducing positive leadership:  Matching leadership behaviours with employee motivation 

Module 2. How do authentic leadership and PsyCap fit together?  

Module 3. The role of supervisor support (LMX) for increasing employee outcomes 

Module 4. How do individuals’ PsyCap levels improve organisational performance, and how do organisations can enhance it 

Module 5. Leadership and change: Where does innovation fit in?  

Module 6. Using positive communication and constructive language to stop the cycle of conflict in organisations.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know,
understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the
graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes
are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

 

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate self-awareness about life goals by undertaking the first stage of a Psychological Capital-building exercise aimed at fostering the development of Hope 

  • Demonstrate relational transparency and rational processing by undertaking the second stage of a Psychological Capital-building exercise aimed at fostering the development of Hope 

  • Demonstrate mastery about different types of positive leadership and Leader-Member Exchange behaviours that impact employees’ psychological capital and critically contrast theory with practice
