Unit description

Introduces students to the concept of the professional learning community and the research literature on successful elements of professional learning. Explores appraisal and performance frameworks as means of monitoring and promoting professional learning. Encourages the development of a culture of reflective practice as an essential part of quality leadership in education.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  • Identify and analyse key concepts in the professional learning literature (reflective practice, life-long learning) in relation to personal practice
  • Critically reflect on the different sources and styles of professional learning and their efficacy
  • Select appropriate approaches and apply key strategies from the research literature to develop the professional learning of self and others
