Unit description

Introduces students to key concepts in both the research literature and industry practice relevant to contemporary educational leadership, and relates these to national and international educational environments. Encourages students to reflect on their personal experience in relation to research literature on leadership, and to learn how to critically analyse and apply relevant leadership concepts in their professional practice.

Topic 1: Introduction to concepts of educational leadership

Topic 2: Theories and models of educational leadership and their practical implementation

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  • Critically engage with the research literature on educational leadership
  • Describe and analyse the origins, distinguishing features and effects of various models of leadership in the field of education
  • Apply concepts of educational leadership to a local context, and present and defend a strategy for improvement
