Meet Aman: she’s one of our long-standing Student Enrolment Advisors. We recently sat down with her and chatted about her role and why it’s so important.
Tell us a little bit about your main responsibilities?
I’m the first port of call for people who are interested in completing an online postgraduate degree. After they’ve done their research (or during), I work closely with prospective students to help choose a program of study that is best suited to their goals and motivations.
My job is to see how I can assist them reach those goals and help them understand how study will fit into their lives. I also talk through the application process and explain how the online learning environment will work.
Why do you believe your role is important to a prospective student?
As I deal with students directly, it’s important to have a thorough conversation about the course and their expectations around online study. We are very student-focused here at Southern Cross, and have the students’ best interests in mind – this is paramount when aligning their goals, motivations and life with studying a postgraduate degree.

What are the key skills needed to perform your role well – why?
Strong customer service skills are important when it comes to helping people succeed in their studies. Great people and communication skills are also essential, because you’re trying to get people to open up and tell you why this decision to study is important to them.
Organisational skills are also needed in my role; often we deal with people who are very busy and time-poor, so it’s important to schedule in time that is convenient for them to have a thorough discussion.
In my opinion, the most critical skill is to be a good listener. We try to encourage and guide the prospective student towards a degree best suited to their goals and experience. It’s great to help people get to the next level in their career.
What aspect of your role do you enjoy most?
Being able to help people change their lives and pursue their goals is really satisfying. People feel incredibly empowered by the opportunity to better their education – to be there at the start is a really special feeling. Hearing them say, ‘I know this is for me’ is great.
